Mos Def's new album The Ecstatic is out new week on the 9th. Mos Def is a fantastic MC, listen to Black on Both Sides. On one track from the new album, Mos works with Talib Kwelli (Black Star!!) on a track produced by the late J-Dilla. Check "History" here.
Wale has released a video for his track "Chillin" featurign Lady Gaga. And part of it was shot in Boston. Bodega is in it. Check it out.
Just a thought: Has anyone else noticed the lack of hip-hop on the Lollapalooza lineup. Beastie Boys, Snoop, Asher Roth, The Knux and Kid Cudi are all the initial lineup offers in terms of hip-hop. Hopefully the next round of additions has more hip-hop. Maybe a certain Chicago based group that is going to release an album in the next few months....
Speaking of the Cool Kids, no news on when they are actually gonna drop their new album but "A Little Bit Cooler" was used in the best of the awesome series of Lebron vs. Kobe puppet commercials. Watch this:

Music and Advertising: is it Impossible to sell out?

Last week in Seattle, Pearl Jam shot a music video with movie director Cameron Crowe. Nothing out of the ordinary. But it was strange that the historically anti-corporate band (see their lawsuit against TicketMaster) was being sponsored by large corporate emporium Target. What the what?

In the past, this probably would have sparked an outrage. But, the times they are a-changin’.It seems as though we are completely desensitized to our favorite artists' being in commercials for everything from crayons to push up bras to all kinds of cars. Apple is to blame. iPod and iTunes ads are highly coveted PR spots for any band, whether small, big or biggest in the world. It’s now acceptable that bands sell random junk to us (including the Wuggie).

But it’s not just on TV. Most music festivals are using corporate sponsorships to manage costs. Last year, Rage Against the Machine played on the AT&T stage at Lollapalooza. One of the most politically outspoken bands of the last decade was playing on a corporately sponsored stage. And no one cared! It doesn’t bother me that I saw Modest Mouse on the Bud Light stage or LCD Soundsystem on the Myspace stage or Girl Talk on the PBR Hipster Stereotype stage. If advertising can help subsidize ticket costs and get more bands, I’m all for sponsoring everything at a festival (this year, Rob Blagojevich sold naming rights for the fountain in Grant Park (Slightly dated, totally lame topical reference!))

Exceptions: I don’t want to see Bon Iver for the Wisconsin Board of Rural Tourism or the Arcade Fire for Crest White Strips (seriously, lets keep the Arcade Fire exclusively for soundtracking mindblowingly awesome movie trailers). But for the most part, I don’t mind this trend at all.

So this week is finals week. Lame times. So, to procrastinate, I thought about my favorite albums to study to. This is my top 5:

5. Funeral- Arcade Fire
One of my favorite albums period. Great study music and Wake Up can renew your soul after its been crushed by your organic chem test.

4. The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place- Explosions in the Sky
Instrumental music= Good to study to. Not as heavy as "Those Who Tell The Truth..." nice and mellow with great buildups. Especially Six Days at The Bottom of The Ocean

3. Kid A- Radiohead
First, I didn't just put this here because I love Radiohead. It's just that this album is great to put on in the background while you read monotonous text books. And who doesn't want to know How to Disappear Completely when your about to take a test! (I apologize, that was a terrible joke)

2. Takk...- Sigur Ros
Really any Sigur Ros will do. But Takk... is a little less reverby, more triumphant and just as hypnotizing as Agaetis Byrjun. Zach properly described their live show as being immersed in a warm blanket. The album might not be as warm blanketty but its close. Especially Glósóli

1. Kind of Blue - Miles Davis
The classic. One of the greatest jazz albums ever made. Anytime I have a paper to write or a test to study for this is what I put on first. So What

The Cool Kids: "Popcorn" and "Champions"

The Cool Kids are making some unbelievably good hip-hop right now. If you don't already have it, get last year's Bake Sale EP which is full of retro beats and summer jams. Later this year, Chuck Inglish and Mickey Rocks are going to release their first LP, When Fish Ride Bicycles. But before that drops there will be a new mixtape "Gone Fishing" which will hit the internet on Monday. Here are the first two leaked tracks "Popcorn" and "Champions." Both are really good, not as mind blowing as When Fish Ride Bicycle's first single "Pennies," yet they should be enough to hold you over until the LPs release.

They haven't released any summer dates yet other than the All Points West Festival in NY but if you get the chance to see them don't miss it. I caught them at last year's Outside Lands festival in SF and their set was one of the most fun of the weekend.

So tomorrow is an important day. The NCAA Tournament begins at noon and ushers in weeks of little productivity as we watch games and root for schools like North Dakota State and Western Kentucky. In honor of this month the blog "We Listen For You" created a bracket of bands in its own tournament. Apparently they did this last year (Radiohead won!) and it seems cool. Here is the link, so if you feel like you need a break from deciding your 5-12 upset this is a good time waster.

Honorable Mentions: Holy Fuck- LP, Arctic Monkeys- Favourite Worst Nightmare, Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before This Ship Even Sank, Against Me! - New Wave

5. LCD Soundsystem- Sound of Silver

Well, this album was awesome last year and remains awesome this year. Also, one of the coolest shows I've been to. But I digress, the bass and drums kick so well on this album and "All My Friends" is one of the best songs of the last decade.

4. The White Stripes - Icky Thump

Totally not on my list last year. I feel like this album and "Sky Blue Sky" belong together. Both are very good albums that are looked down upon because previous efforts by both bands are better. But Icky Thump is still ballin. Jack White proves once again why he is considered one of the best guitarists of our generation

3. Lupe Fiasco- The Cool

This album came out in December so it was a little to late to make last years list. But after a year of listening to Lupe, I am convinced he is the best rapper working today. Yeah, I said it! From the great stories of "Hip-Hop Saved My Life" and "Little Weapon" to simply cool tracks like "Gold Watch" and "Hello/Goodbye (Uncool)," Lupe proves to excel at anything he does. Can't wait for the triple album that will be LUPend

2. Spoon- Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Despite what Zach says, I think this album is pretty much perfect front to back. Well done Spoon, not a bad track on the album.

1. Arcade Fire- Neon Bible

My favorite album from last years list remains at the top. This album is such a beautiful emotional journey from the energy of "Keep the Car Running" to the solemnness of "Neon Bible." This album is one of those great experiences where you love to listen to the entire thing. And "My Body is a Cage" is still as chilling as the first time I heard it.

MGMT, Oracular Spectacular. Yeah sure, so this band got so big so quickly that my dad started listening to them, that doesn't make the album any worse, my summer 08 album, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

Band of Horses, Cease to Begin. Unfairly labeled as a mediocre followup to their 2006 release, Everything all the Time. This album may not peak the way Everything All the Time did with The Funeral, but it is far more consistent. Additionally, it has a track named Detlef Schrempf. Any true NBA Hangtime fans know what I'm talking about.

Spoon, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Definitely the most disappointing concerts of my life, doesn't change a very very good release by Spoon. Maybe not as consistent as you would like (The Ghost of You Lingers is a terrible, terrible track), but unlike Cease to Begin, it hits some awesome high points.

End of Summer Giant Post

Sorry I haven't posted yet this summer but i am going to make it up with one awesome post at the end of the summer.

As you can see in the header High Fidelity has been moved from the brutally early time of 10am on Saturdays to the awesome time slot 4-6PM Thursday. Yeah!

As for music and what not:

Girl Talk is unbelievable. For me, it's the album of the summer. Whether I am driving to the beach in Santa Cruz or just kicking it old school, Girl Talk has been the perfect soundtrack.
Radiohead live is breath taking. Seriously unbelievable show, from the crazy light display to the unbelievable virtuosity and creativity of the musicians. I am seeing them again this Friday and would suggest you see them if you get the chance. (Also, I was twenty feet from Jonny Greenwood in a crowd of seventy thousand. Awesome)
As for other shows, Modest Mouse was once again disappointing live but the National and REM were very good. Death Cab was a fantastic show. How did I not like this band at one point? Seriously. Wolf Parade may have been the second best show I saw this summer. Great energy and the songs really hold up live.
The Glow in the Dark Tour was really weird. First, Lupe was the first opening act. What?!!? Possibly the best hip-hop artists right now (Lil Wayne is great, but is more like listening to awesome gangsta stream of conscious rants) and he is opening? I get it logically with other bands who are on the pop charts, but still I was a little bothered. NERD and Rihana were both good and got the crowd ready for the main event....Kanye West talking to a TV screen! Its kinda like watching a one man play with terrible acting interspersed with bangin tunes. Why would such a dynamic artist ignore a sold-out stadium for an 1h and 30m in a 1h and 40m show?
I bought a ticket to download festival for 10$. I got ripped off. When you fit a bill with indie bands used to playing small venues and put them on a stage that is used for John Mayer and Pearl Jam shows you are going to have a problem. None of the bands could play to such a large crowd. and Brand New was absolutely terrible.
Movies. Pineapple Express: Mediocre. Tropic Thunder: Hilarious, like see it multiple times hilarious. The Dark Knight: Magical ("What a great sly reference Garrett" "Why thank you").

Everyone has a few bands or albums in their music collection that they listen to over and over once classes end and the temperature. Here's a couple of my picks for good summer 2008 albums:

The Low End Theory - A Tribe Called Quest"Runnin' mad game as if your name was Scott Skiles. Or better yet Magic, or even Karl Malone.
Regardless who it is, your aim is to bone."

Tribe's second album features amazing jazz samples combined with Q-Tip's smooth flow and Phife Dawg's clever rhymes that make it a summer staple for any hip-hop-head.

Lil' Wayne - Tha Carter III
"It's Tha Carter III bitch betta put your supper up!"

Alright so he's not the best rapper alive. He repeats himself a lot. He sounds like he's talking to himself instead of rapping sometimes. He's killed more brain cells than Pacman Jones and Travis Henry combined. But somehow, Lil Wayne still came out with the best hip-hop album since Jay-Z's The Black Album. Weezy brings the same incredible metaphors that his mixtapes are chock full of: "I hate rats/ I clean them out like ajax/ got paper like a fax machine." While it might not validate Weezy's ego or the critical hype, for whatever reason I can't stop listening to Tha Carter III.

Girl Talk- Feed the Animals
With Feed the Animals, Gregg Gillis establishes why he's the premier mash-up DJ working today. A quick look at the samples he uses include Lil Mama, Metallica, T.I. and Sinead O'Connor. Gillis' amazing ability to make unlikely pairs of songs work together make Feed the Animals the best club album to come out this summer.

I'm not just saying this because I'm a sap for this band, as we all know I am, but this was the best show I've been to in 2008. I will be kind of surprised if when FR comes back to Boston, they're playing in a club as small as TT the Bear's. And just when I didn't think the show can get any better, the drummer from their opener, The Oxford Collapse, came out to play floor tom for one of their songs. A+ stache and an A+ show.

Gnarls Barkley released their new album The Odd Couple online. For free. BACKWARDS! It is actually even a bit too weird for me but you should check it out here.

The Age of Understatement, the album by the Last Shadow Puppets (who are fronted by Arctic Money Alex Turner), has been released everywhere but the US. But I'm sure you can find it if you look hard enough (or search in shady enough places). expect a review soon. Here is the title track:

Coachella is this weekend. It marks the beginning of an oversaturated festival season. There has been a recent swell in the number of festivals in the US. Its got pros and cons. On the pros there is now a major festival in almost every region of the country this summer. Its nice cause travel is not as hard. But this also takes away from festivals being special. I mean, other than for a few acts(This weekend those include Prince, Aphex Twin, Portishead and The Verve) its basically the same artists doing the festival circuit. What do you think? Since Garrett STILL hasn't let Zach post on the blog here are his thoughts on the new Kooks album. Enjoy.

When The Kooks exploded onto the scene in 2006 with their debut album Inside In/Inside Out, it was clear that they were going to do great things. With their pop-beats and catchy chorus lines, the announcement of Konk, their second studio album sent excitement throughout the music community.
As I listened, however, it slowly became apparent that Konk was going to disappoint me. While the album did not completely lack the flavor that made Inside In/Inside Out so successful, the more serious tone that it took simply did not suit their musical style. Inside In/Inside Out was a fast paced, fun album. The tracks of Konk are slowed down, and calmed down. With far more acoustic tracks than their first album, the album dragged.
The album begins with “See the Sun,” which certainly showed what the Kooks were planning on doing with the album. “See the Sun,” is definitely Kook-like, but it is much more somber than most of the songs off their first album. The first single off Konk “Always Where I Need to Be” is the highlight of the album, returning to the fun, upbeat style of Inside In/Inside Out. In the end however, the album simply falls under the category of “decent.” The track “Fa La La La La” characterizes the album as a whole. A slow acoustic song, it is a good song, but it just doesn’t do what the Kooks do.
It could be that the Kooks are attempting to mature by moving their sound into a more relaxed area. However, the album simply doesn’t leap out at the listener the way that Inside In/Inside Out did. Konk does not bury the Kooks, and I’m hoping, in years to come, it will be looked at as just a sophomore slump.
Still extremely young (lead singer Luke Pritchard, the oldest member of the band is just 23), the Kooks will continue to make music far into the future. It’s unfair how high the Kooks have set the bar for themselves. Konk is not a bad album; it’s just not nearly as good as Inside In/Inside Out.

R.I.P. Cindy

As those of you who listened to the show last week learned, High Fidelity intern Zach Kohn suffered a tragic loss last Saturday. His cat Cindy died of natural causes at the age of 20.

Zach is currently grieving but has taken the blow very well. Although Peisin, Garrett and I made it clear we would be very understanding if he took a bereavement leave, Zach is a dedicated and mentally strong intern who will continue to come into the studio and contribute his wit, charm, and humor to the show.

You lived a good life Cindy, and you will be missed.

A Really Unexpected Post: Me Talking About Klaxons

Klaxons performed a duet at the 2008 Brit Awards with none other than Rihanna. Every time I hear her name I can hear an "Ella-Ella-Eh-Eh-Eh" in the back of my head. I don't think Umbrella is a bad song, I'm just sick of it and the zillions of covers out there.

The morning after the Brits I eagerly waited for a YouTube video of the performance, as I didn't watch the awards on TV. I have to say the lights and laser pyramid- Daft Punk anyone?- were awesome. As I am slightly obsessed with Klaxons I enjoy their crazy outfits, but the song itself was not that good. It was basically a rock version of Umbrella with Golden Skans playing in the back. I felt like that could have been any other band playing with Rihanna; I was definitely disappointed by Klaxons. Their signature Ooohs and Ahhs had a lower pitch and were almost whispered.

Klaxons should stay away from pop songs- their cover of Justin Timberlake's My Love is worse than this Umbrella/Golden Skans mash-up.

Anyways, this will be the one and only time I will speak- or write- ill words about Klaxons. It's ok Klaxons, I still love you. (Insert Jack and Garrett rolling their eyes at me)

This weekend i was listening to my music when Sam Cooke's "A Change Gonna Come" came on. It is an unbelievable song. The lyrics, the orchestration and the voice are all perfect. If you haven't heard the song, go out and download it.
